Coloured stones quality depends on numerous factors which can be evaluated in an objective manner. The difficult part in giving an overall quality grade is to give the right weighting to each factor, this requires to create a specific method of calculation for every gem specie because of their different properties. Such method is a rational way to reach a standard for allow to meaningful comparisons but it does not remove the fact that all of us have different taste and preferences; beauty is firstly the result of a personal feeling.
Quality grading is function of three aspects made of several criteria:
The gem weight and its rarity are playing the role of a fourth complementary aspect which can be included or left aside in quality grading because both big and small stones as well as common and rare stones can be of good quality. This aspect has more to do with pricing and if quality grading is viewed under a pricing angle, then it must be included in quality grading but with some care and explanations.
